Description

On December 19-20, 1981, youth came together in the capital city of Managua at the 2nd National Assembly to support the Sandinista National Liberation Front’s (FLSN’s) literacy campaign in a national rally. From 1980 onwards, a number of campaigns were held in Nicaragua to reduce the illiteracy rate in the country. However, the National Literacy Crusade, which took place from March to August 1980, was the most intense and widespread. Youth played a key role throughout this five-month crusade, as they were the majority of the volunteers. Schools were closed during the majority of the literacy crusade, allowing youth to focus their efforts on increasing the literacy rate in the country, with an emphasis on rural areas.
