Description

As a part of their efforts to democratize Nicaragua, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) encouraged citizens to exercise their democratic rights and to register to vote for elections held on November 4th, 1984. Seven parties nominated one presidential candidate each, representing a broad political spectrum from the far-left to the far-right. With 75% voter turnout and with a 66% majority, the FSLN candidate Daniel Ortega was elected president. This historic election, deemed free and fair by impartial international experts, received criticism from the United States government and Contra supporters from within Nicaragua.
