“You are the United States,
You are the future invader of an ingenuous America
Our America...lives on.
And dreams... and loves, and is vibrant and is the daughter of the sun”
-Rubén Dario

Description

Rubén Darío is Nicaragua’s most famous literary figure. Born in Metapa, Matagalpa, on January 18, 1867, he wrote various poems and literary works from an early age and travelled throughout much of Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Despite all of his successes, he descended into alcoholism after the death of his first wife in 1893, which caused health complications and contributed to his death on February 6, 1916. Because his works are said to have been a precursor to the Nicaraguan Revolution and influenced much of the thinking of the revolutionary leaders, he is hailed as a national hero and his birthday was marked as Cultural Independence Day.
