The supposed apolitical nature of women made it possible for the Sandinistas (and the Contras) to frame women’s mobilization in the revolution as selfless acts of caring for their families. This enabled women on both sides of the conflict to make demands in support of or in opposition to the revolution from personal and emotional standpoints, without political baggage. Still, images such as these promoting the Patriotic Military Service (SMP) show clear elements of patriotism and suggest that it is every citizen’s duty to fight for their country and protect those they love from military, economic, and political oppression.
