Although the draft was imposed in 1983, a large number of Nicaraguan youth voluntarily joined the military to defend the Sandinista Revolution against the Contras. However, while we see optimistic images of brave men and women fighting for justice in these images, the Patriotic Military Service (SMP) was not received positively by all Nicaraguans and in fact faced intense opposition. Parents protested against what many referred to as the ‘Mandatory Military Service’ and thousands of youth fled the country to avoid being drafted.
