This image of a woman and mother in combat gear was reproduced throughout the 1980s revolutionary period in many forms to promote the Sandinista Revolution, gender equality, and women’s solidarity with the struggle. This poster depicts a new woman – the ideal Sandinista woman, that of a “Spartan mother”: a revolutionary defending her country and her family from U.S. imperialism and aggression. This image then went on to become the official poster commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution in 1989.
