NATIONAL LITERACY CRUSADE
The Ministry of Education
Description
The Ministry of Education promoted the National Literacy Crusade and it was mostly welcomed by the rural communities where they operated. A common slogan of the time was, “In every home a classroom/ Every table a school desk/ Every Nicaraguan a teacher.” Mass organizations played an important role in the first Sandinista government; over half of the adult Nicaraguan population was incorporated in these various groups throughout the 1980s. Mentioned here are the CST (Sandinista Workers’ Federation), the AMNLAE (Luisa Amanda Espinoza Nicaraguan Women's Association,) ANDEN (National Association of Nicaraguan Teachers), ATC (Association of Agricultural Workers, the Sandinista Defense Committees (CDS) and the July 19th Sandinista Youth ( JS-19.) These groups were the FSLN’s main organized base of support and this poster seems to be calling for solidarity among civil society to support the literacy crusade.
