Description
The Popular Literacy Army, or EPA, were those individuals that volunteered to fight the battle against illiteracy; they were the teaching force. The EPA consisted mostly of secondary and university student volunteers from urban areas who taught full-time in the rural and mountainous areas. Many strong personal relationships were established between the rural students and the brigadistas (volunteer teachers); in many ways, the literacy campaign helped to bridge some of the gap between rural and urban citizens. Government use of the official FSLN colours in posters such as this one promoted its ideology as well as youth integration into the Sandinista culture.
