The promotion of literacy went hand in hand with the fight for social justice. The Literacy Brigades were welcomed from most Nicaraguans in order to encourage learning and education for all. Sandinistas believed that the mass-mobilization of the countryside played a key role in revolution; therefore importance was placed on reaching the rural areas of Nicaragua, where illiteracy rates were highest. Rates of illiteracy averaged about 75% in the countryside, as opposed to 28% in urban areas.
