Description
Fernando Cardenal once said, “Nicaraguan people should be confident that they could win the battle against illiteracy since they already had defeated a strong, well-armed enemy in the former dictator.” As the coordinator of the National Literacy Campaign, Cardenal oversaw the movement designed to encourage youth to join the literacy brigades travelling to rural areas of Nicaragua. During the 5-month long crusade, schools were closed to allow students to travel to rural areas in order to teach the local population to read. Although the majority of the brigadistas were university and secondary students, children as young as 12 were dispatched to all corners of Nicaragua in the fight against illiteracy.
